Small neck lift or “submentoplasty”

Sometimes young patients (< 40) also complain about the lack of contour of their chin and jawline. In some cases, this is caused by being overweight and the best advice is to lose a few pounds. More often, however, there is a predisposition and specific anatomical structure that gives rise to the problem. In the case of a receding or small chin, for example, the double chin muscles are less tight, creating an undesirable shape. Enlarging the chin can make a difference in such circumstances.

A small neck lift or “submentoplasty” is an effective alternative for some patients. Some patients believe liposuction can solve their problem and occasionally this is justified. However, experience reveals that there is usually more going on than just the superficial fat that can be reached with liposuction. In many cases, the neck muscles are also enlarged and there is an excess of fat beneath the neck muscles. This can be visualized by means of a small incision under the chin, making it possible to actually observe which parts are responsible for the full contour. If necessary, a chin implant can also be placed during the same procedure and through the same incision. Surgery on the front of the neck under local anesthesia is generally perceived as unpleasant by patients. For this reason, a small neck lift is usually performed under general anesthesia. The procedure lasts approximately 1 hour. It is not painful, and the recovery is quick. Stitches are removed after 1 week. The main complications that can occur are subcutaneous bleeding and problems with the scar healing process. A small neck lift is rarely an adequate solution for patients over 40 years of age, as there is usually excess skin involved. A classic neck lift, whether or not in combination with a facelift, is recommended.

Eyebrows and eyelids

Forehead wrinkles, the position of the eyebrows, and excess skin of the upper eyelids are all signs of the same aging process. Vertical prolapse of the eyebrows, loss of fat around the eye socket, overactivity of the forehead muscles, and thinning of the skin are partly responsible for drooping eyelids.

Chin augmentation

A small chin is rather common and is fortunately not always a cause for concern. Especially in women, a smaller chin can actually adorn the face, making it softer and more feminine. However, this is less so in more serious cases.
