Chin augmentation

A small chin is rather common and is fortunately not always a cause for concern. Especially in women, a smaller chin can actually adorn the face, making it softer and more feminine. However, this is less so in more serious cases. A chin can be too small in different ways. The chin may be too short vertically: the distance from the bottom lip to the bottom of the chin is relatively too short compared to the rest of the face.

This is known as "micrognathia". The chin may also be too much receded. This is known as "retrognathia" and may be caused by an underdevelopment of the entire lower jaw. In most cases, however, micrognathia and retrognathia are combined, the upper jaw is also involved, and there are also deviations of the teeth. All in all, these are complex problems, which may require the involvement of a maxillofacial surgeon.

If the client’s wish is purely aesthetic, there are various techniques to enlarge a small chin. A chin that is too short vertically is referred to the maxillofacial surgeon. A normal chin implant could contribute to the vertical length, but the effect is usually modest. To add forward volume to the chin, there are different surgical approaches. For example, the maxillofacial surgeon can mobilize the lower jaw forward. Another option is to only supplement volume. This can be done with injectable fillers, body fat, or a chin implant. All three materials are effective, but each has its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the main disadvantages of fillers is their temporary nature. At the same time, however, they come with advantages such as reversibility, a relatively low price, and low risks. Body fat does not have the limitation of temporality, but it is more difficult to shape a chin with. For this reason, a silicone chin implant is often the preferred option. Its sturdy structure allows for precise manipulation, yielding a natural-looking result. Generally, the implant is placed under general anesthesia, through an incision beneath the chin. The procedure takes about an hour and is usually not experienced as intense. We use “solid silicone” implants. These do not “leak” - as is sometimes the case with breast implants - and do not need to be replaced. It is possible for a chin implant to become infected. The risk of this occurring is around 5%. When it does, the implant should be removed.

Small neck lift or “submentoplasty”

Sometimes young patients (< 40) also complain about the lack of contour of their chin and jawline. In some cases, this is caused by being overweight and the best advice is to lose a few pounds. More often, however, there is a predisposition and specific anatomical structure that gives rise to the problem.

Eyebrows and eyelids

Forehead wrinkles, the position of the eyebrows, and excess skin of the upper eyelids are all signs of the same aging process. Vertical prolapse of the eyebrows, loss of fat around the eye socket, overactivity of the forehead muscles, and thinning of the skin are partly responsible for drooping eyelids.
